I love that stone-cold look on his face. It’s not just focusing on work, it’s focusing on the fact that he is going to fuck some stuff up and WIN, and sorry but that’s hot.

All I frankly need to say is that this is his immediate response to “You lack conviction.”
Look. At that. Expression.
He is squirming. That STUNG. It is a perfect summation of his fatal flaw.
And by” lack conviction,” Coulson didn’t mean “you’re lazy” or “you don’t see things through.” Oh no. Loki is stubborn and Loki is determined and Loki endures. What Coulson meant, rather, was that Loki lacks certitude about who he is. What he wants. What his higher purpose is. He wants contradictory things with equal intensity. He intentionally fails to see how he deceives even himself fully.
Having a very “plain” and “ordinary” human spit that back in your face, a human everyone in the end loves and lionizes (without forcing it on them, without demanding that they kneel and fear you), has to have been a staggering blow.
And Coulson is totally and completely right.
I pity Loki in this moment. He tries so hard but in all the wrong ways. And like most villains of his particular type, he makes half the mistakes he makes in reaction to the false belief that he has no other choice. That his fate is sealed and his role prescribed. That he might as well play it to the fullest, and never try to be anything else.
